49ers Face Cap Decisions as Brock Purdy Extension Talks Stall
Share
The 49ers have undergone significant roster changes this offseason, parting ways with several key players. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and defensive end Leonard Floyd were released, while cornerback Charvarius Ward and linebacker Dre Greenlaw departed in free agency. Additionally, wide receiver Deebo Samuel was traded. These moves have left San Francisco with $80.9 million in dead cap, but they still hold $33.5 million in cap space — the fifth-highest in the league.
A portion of that space will likely go toward extending quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract.
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, who spoke on KNBR Thursday, Purdy’s camp has received an offer but isn't inclined to accept it at this stage. Purdy is expected to land a deal exceeding $50 million per year, which would place him 11th among NFL quarterbacks in annual salary.
49ers owner Jed York recently referred to Purdy as a top-10 quarterback — and the team will need to compensate him accordingly.
However, not everyone agrees with that valuation. Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua expressed his doubts during an appearance on Julian Edelman’s Games with Names podcast.
“I don’t think so,” Nacua said when asked if Purdy deserved a deal north of $50 million, via Joaquin Ruiz of NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think mid-$40 million range makes more sense.”
Nacua added that while Purdy seems like a smart player, signing a massive deal could hurt San Francisco’s Super Bowl chances by limiting roster flexibility. “They have a chance to still be in their window, and I think if he goes for [$50 million-plus], then the window closes,” he said.
It's rare for players to comment on another player’s contract negotiations, especially across teams, but Nacua's concerns are valid. Still, the quarterback market is driven by precedent — and Purdy has outperformed expectations. Despite being drafted last overall, he’s compiled a 23-13 regular-season record, a 4-2 playoff record, 9,518 passing yards, and 64 touchdowns — all while on a rookie-scale salary.
So far, however, he’s just 1-2 as a starter against the Rams.
