Brandon Sproat Shines in Triple-A with Strong Performance, Drawing Closer to Mets' Call-Up
Share
Mets pitching prospect Brandon Sproat seems to have found his rhythm in Triple-A.
The 24-year-old right-hander has delivered three consecutive solid performances, including six strong innings in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons.
Sproat faced some early trouble, allowing leadoff singles in the first two innings, but managed to get out of both jams with double plays. In the third, he worked around a two-out walk, aided by a caught stealing, and began to settle into a groove. He retired the next eight batters before allowing an infield single in the sixth. He ended his outing on a high note by retiring the next batter.
Overall, Sproat pitched six shutout innings, giving up just four hits and a walk, while striking out one. He reached a fastball velocity of 99.5 mph and threw his sweeper 38% of the time.
After a tough finish to last season with Syracuse, Sproat has rebounded nicely, allowing only two runs and striking out nine in 14.1 innings over his last three appearances (1.26 ERA).
The Mets are likely keeping a close eye on him as he continues his strong pitching. Reports suggest he was considered as a spot starter for a game against the Cardinals before Griffin Canning was scratched. If he keeps performing like this, it may not be long before Sproat gets his call to the majors.
