Browns Challenge Myles Garrett to Step Up as Leader After $160 Million Extension

Browns Challenge Myles Garrett to Step Up as Leader After $160 Million Extension

In March, the Browns secured Myles Garrett with a four-year, $160 million extension, which includes $123.5 million guaranteed. With this new deal, the team is now expecting more leadership from their star edge rusher.

“We’ve challenged Myles to step up as a true leader, both through his actions and practice habits,” said Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, as reported by Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “He has committed to that, and we are hopeful he will follow through.”

On the field, Garrett has consistently delivered since being drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2017. With seven double-digit sack seasons, 102.5 career sacks, a Defensive Player of the Year honor, six Pro Bowls, and four All-Pro selections, he is on track for a future in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

However, despite his on-field success, Jason Lloyd of TheAthletic.com revealed that Garrett’s commitment has been questioned internally, as he has been known to be late to the facility and has missed mandatory team activities several times. Despite these issues, the Browns never seriously considered trading Garrett, even after he requested one.

“We had many discussions about it, but trading Myles was never really an option,” Haslam explained. “We know we have a Hall of Famer in him. These situations can be emotional, and it’s important to understand that there are agents and agencies behind the scenes. We’re just glad it all worked out.”
