Bucks struggle defensively in 145-124 loss to Hawks, extend losing streak to four

On Sunday, March 31, 2025, the Milwaukee Bucks suffered a demoralizing 145-124 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, extending their losing streak to four games. Head coach Doc Rivers had prepped his team before the game, recalling advice from coaching legend Red Auerbach regarding the importance of limiting turnovers and securing rebounds. Unfortunately, the Bucks struggled with both, giving up 26 points off turnovers and 17 points off offensive rebounds. The Hawks shot 57.1% from the field in the first half, capitalizing on the Bucks' defensive breakdowns. Rivers expressed frustration with his team's transition defense and acknowledged the need for improvements.

Despite a strong offensive performance, shooting 69% overall in the first half, the Bucks couldn’t overcome their defensive woes. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the team with 31 points and contributed significantly as a playmaker, but Atlanta's rookie Zaccharie Risacher, who scored 36 points, and Trae Young, who dished out 19 assists, were too much for the Bucks to contain. Onyeka Okongwu also added a double-double, and the Hawks took a commanding 26-point lead into the fourth quarter. Although the Bucks mounted a brief rally, cutting the deficit to 16, they were unable to make a full comeback.

The second half saw the Bucks outscored 63-49, with a slow start to the third quarter, where the Hawks opened with a 13-2 run. Rivers admitted he made a mistake in not utilizing his bench more during a previous loss to the Knicks, and he kept an eight-man rotation until the team was down by 25 points. Young players like Andre Jackson Jr. and Gary Trent Jr. provided some spark, but the Bucks couldn't capitalize. Kevin Porter Jr. pointed out the team’s overthinking and lack of trust, leading to turnovers and missed opportunities.

This loss marks another tough stretch for the Bucks, who have now dropped nine of their last 13 games since March 5. As the playoffs approach, the Bucks are fighting for position in the Eastern Conference, with the Detroit Pistons hot on their heels for the No. 5 seed. The Bucks' defense, which was once a strength, has faltered, and injuries, particularly the absence of Damian Lillard due to a calf injury, have further complicated matters. Despite the setbacks, Antetokounmpo remains committed to leading his team through this rough patch, focusing on staying vocal and building confidence in his teammates. However, the Bucks must address their defensive issues if they hope to rebound in the final stretch of the regular season.
