On Thursday, April 3, 2025, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar achieved a historic milestone by scoring his 30th goal of the season in a 7-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. This accomplishment makes Makar the ninth defenseman in NHL history, and the first with Colorado, to reach the 30-goal mark in a single season.
Makar's goal came late in the second period, with just 38 seconds remaining. On a power play, Nathan MacKinnon passed to Makar in the left circle, where he one-timed the puck past Columbus goaltender Igor Shesterkin. This goal not only extended Colorado's lead but also solidified Makar's place in NHL history.
In addition to his goal, Makar contributed two assists, bringing his season point total to 90. This matches the franchise record for points by a defenseman, a record he set last season. With this performance, Makar became the fifth defenseman in NHL history to record consecutive 90-point seasons, joining the ranks of Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, and Al MacInnis.
Makar's achievement is particularly notable as he is the first defenseman to surpass the 30-goal mark since Mike Green of the Washington Capitals scored 31 goals during the 2008-09 season. Other defensemen who have reached this milestone include Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, Ray Bourque, Kevin Hatcher, Phil Housley, and Doug Wilson.
The Avalanche's victory over the Blue Jackets also secured their eighth consecutive playoff appearance, underscoring the team's strong performance this season. Makar's exceptional play has been a driving force behind Colorado's success, and his continued contributions will be crucial as the team advances toward the postseason.
