Commanders Reshape Roster with Aggressive Free Agency Moves
Share
The Washington Commanders entered free agency prepared to be aggressive—and they delivered, making nearly three dozen moves in two weeks to reshape their roster. After a 12-5 season that ended just short of the Super Bowl, they focused on bolstering both sides of the ball to compete with the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Short-Term Deals, High Stakes
Of the 29 players signed or traded for, 24 are on one-year deals, ensuring financial flexibility while fueling player motivation. Standout additions include receiver Deebo Samuel, who arrives with a restructured deal guaranteeing his $17.5 million salary, and receiver Michael Gallup, returning from retirement with renewed hunger. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw landed a three-year contract, determined to prove his worth after an up-and-down career.
Reinventing the Defensive Line
Washington overhauled its defensive front, parting ways with former Pro Bowl tackle Jonathan Allen and replacing him with depth and versatility. They signed Deatrich Wise Jr., Jacob Martin, Kinlaw, and Eddie Goldman—players capable of shifting between multiple positions, a key factor in head coach Dan Quinn’s defensive philosophy. With improved talent and flexibility, Washington aims to shore up a run defense that ranked 30th in yards allowed per game.
Upgrading Protection for Jayden Daniels
To solidify their offensive line, Washington acquired five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil in a trade with Houston. Tunsil’s arrival stabilizes Daniels’ blind side and allows the Commanders to move rookie Brandon Coleman to another position. With Tunsil, Coleman, center Tyler Biadasz, and guards Sam Cosmi and Nick Allegretti, Washington has a stronger foundation than in years past.
Deebo Samuel: A Game-Changer
Washington needed another explosive playmaker to complement Terry McLaurin, and Samuel fits the bill. His ability to break tackles and turn short passes into big gains provides Daniels with a dynamic new weapon. Samuel’s 52 career receptions of 25+ yards highlight his ability to stretch defenses, something Washington lacked last season.
Draft Flexibility and Future Outlook
While the Commanders still have room to add an elite edge rusher in the draft, their offseason moves give them options rather than forcing their hand. With a revamped roster and key additions, Washington is positioning itself for sustained success in the NFC.
