DJ LeMahieu Shines in First Rehab Start with Double-A Somerset

DJ LeMahieu kicked off his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, and the Yankees' veteran infielder made quite an impression.

Batting second, LeMahieu went a perfect 3-for-3, including a home run, and finished just a triple shy of the cycle. He also played five innings at second base. 

In his first at-bat, LeMahieu roped a double to right field, driving in the game’s first run. He then came up in the second with two outs, down 1-2 in the count, and launched a home run over the right-center field wall off Evan Shawver. LeMahieu completed his night with a single in the fourth that deflected off pitcher Alex Barger.

LeMahieu began the season on the IL with a strained left calf, following only two at-bats in spring training. At the time, he was in the midst of a third-base competition with Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas. The injury opened the door for Cabrera and Peraza to secure spots on the Yankees’ opening roster.

If LeMahieu stays healthy and gets enough reps in the minors, there's a chance he could be called up before May.

The 36-year-old will look to bounce back from a challenging 2024 season. In just 67 games, he hit .204 with a .269 OBP and a .527 OPS, while adding only two home runs, 26 RBIs, and five doubles.
