Francisco Lindor, known as an unofficial leader for the New York Mets, has officially been named the captain of Team Puerto Rico for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The Mets shortstop shared the announcement on social media, expressing his pride in the honor: "Honored to be captain of Team Puerto Rico for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Vamos mi borinquen!"
Lindor previously served as captain for Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where the team was eliminated by Mexico in the second round. Over five games in that tournament, Lindor hit .450, going 9-for-20 with a triple, five RBIs, one stolen base, and a walk.
While this may not be the news Mets fans were hoping for, especially following the injury Edwin Díaz suffered during a post-win celebration with Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 WBC, Lindor has expressed understanding of their concerns. "I understand how Mets fans are hurting," Lindor said in response. "But for many of us, the WBC means just as much as the regular season. It’s a dream for every Puerto Rican ballplayer to represent our country, and the WBC is an ultimate honor for all players involved."
Lindor also acknowledged the risk of injuries but emphasized the passion he feels playing for his country. "It's like Game 7 every day. I love wearing Puerto Rico across my chest. I give everything I have, and I set the bar for that energy," Lindor said. "I'm pumped for the upcoming WBC as teams are getting even stronger."
Lindor now joins Aaron Judge of Team USA as one of the two captains named for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
