Lions Lock in All-Pro Safety Kerby Joseph with Record-Breaking $86 Million Extension

The Detroit Lions have made a significant move just ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft by securing All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph to a landmark four-year, $86 million contract extension. This deal makes Joseph the highest-paid safety in NFL history, surpassing the previous record held by Tampa Bay’s Antoine Winfield Jr.

A Rising Star in Detroit's Defense

Kerby Joseph, drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Illinois, has quickly become a cornerstone of Detroit's defense. In the 2024 season, he led the NFL with nine interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and added 83 tackles and 12 pass breakups in 17 starts. His outstanding performance earned him first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Football Focus grade of 91.0, the highest among all safeties that season.

Strategic Move for the Lions

The Lions' decision to lock in Joseph now reflects their commitment to building a strong defensive unit. General Manager Brad Holmes has previously indicated interest in extending key players, and Joseph's new contract aligns with the team's strategy to secure top talent.

With this extension, Joseph is set to remain a central figure in Detroit's defense, contributing to the team's aspirations of contending for a Super Bowl in the coming seasons.
