Luis Arraez Carted Off After Scary Collision, Padres Edge Astros 3-2
Share
San Diego Padres designated hitter Luis Arraez was carted off the field Sunday night after a frightening collision at first base during the team’s 3-2 win over the Houston Astros.
The incident occurred in the first inning at Daikin Park, when Arraez ran into Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubón while trying to beat out a sacrifice bunt. The two collided hard, sending both players to the ground. Dubón quickly popped back up, but Arraez stayed down, appearing to favor his left shoulder and remaining motionless.
Trainers and teammates rushed to assist. Arraez was eventually stretchered off, giving a thumbs up as he was carted away. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was confirmed to be conscious, stable, and able to move all his limbs. After initial tests revealed no fractures and cleared concerns about head and neck injuries, Arraez was released and returned to the Padres' clubhouse postgame. He’s expected to remain in Houston overnight for further evaluation.
“Obviously, very scary,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “But the initial testing is very favorable. We’re counting our blessings.”
Dubón, clearly shaken after the play, said the moment was tough to process. “It was scary… especially seeing him not move. I’m not a dirty player. It sucks,” he said, adding he’s already received threats from angry fans.
After a 15-minute delay, the game resumed. Fernando Tatis Jr. scored in the first inning on a throwing error, then hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh. Gavin Sheets, who entered the game after Arraez’s exit, drove in a run with an RBI single in the third.
Arraez, 28, is batting .287 this season with three home runs and seven RBI. He led the National League with 200 hits last year and joined the Padres via trade from the Marlins last May. San Diego signed him to a one-year, $14 million deal this past offseason.
The win snapped a potential sweep and improved the Padres’ record to 16-6. They now head to Detroit for a three-game series against the Tigers starting Monday.
