Mets Drop Series to Twins After Missed Opportunities, Look Ahead to Cardinals Series
Share
The Mets entered their series against the Twins riding high — they hadn’t lost back-to-back games or dropped a series since Opening Weekend in Houston. But both streaks came to an end with Wednesday’s 4-3 extra-inning loss, largely due to missed chances at the plate.
After a strong Game 1 powered by Juan Soto and defensive miscues from Minnesota, the Mets dropped the final two games, going just 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position in those contests — and 5-for-28 over the series.
“It’s baseball. You’re gonna have ups and downs,” said Brandon Nimmo. “Right now we’re going through some downs with runners in scoring position, but we’re getting guys on. The more chances we get, the more we’ll come through. I’m proud that we’re still finding ways to win despite that — and we’ll get better.”
All of the Mets’ hits with runners in scoring position on Wednesday came in one inning — a three-run rally in the eighth that tied the game. However, they couldn’t finish the comeback and fell in the 10th.
“We didn’t play good baseball in the first half of the game,” said manager Carlos Mendoza. “But coming back like that in the eighth against one of their better arms was a good sign. Still, we didn’t get the job done overall — we’ve got to play better.”
Now sitting at 11-7, the Mets head into a four-game home series against the 9-9 Cardinals on the heels of their first losing streak of the season.
One bright spot continues to be Pete Alonso, who stayed hot at the plate with three hits Wednesday, including an RBI double that jumpstarted the Mets' eighth-inning rally.
“He’s swinging it amazing,” said Nimmo. “He’s taking what pitchers give him and putting together great at-bats. He worked hard this offseason and it’s showing. He looks like a complete hitter. We’ll need that moving forward.”
Nimmo Ready for Center Field Return
With Jose Siri expected to hit the injured list, the Mets are evaluating their center field options. Manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that Nimmo could shift from left to center, while Jeff McNeil is rehabbing in the minors and could also factor in. Luisangel Acuña might get a look as well.
Nimmo said he’s open to whatever role the team needs.
“I’ll play wherever they want me to. If that’s center field, I’ll be there,” Nimmo said. “It doesn’t matter to me — I don’t have that kind of pride. I just want to help the team win, wherever that is.”
