Patrick Surtain Eyes Super Bowl After DPOY Season as Broncos Bolster Defense with Key Additions

Coming off a breakout year in 2024 where he earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors and experienced his first postseason appearance, Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain has his sights set even higher for the 2025 season.
“What’s next for me after a year like that?” Surtain said in an interview with 9News' Mike Klis. “Honestly, a Super Bowl would be the perfect follow-up.”
Denver’s defense was already a top-tier unit last season, ranking seventh in total yards allowed and third in points allowed. But the Broncos didn't rest on their success—they bolstered their defense in free agency by adding two key veterans from the San Francisco 49ers: safety Talanoa Hufanga and linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
Both players are looking to bounce back after injury-shortened 2024 campaigns. Hufanga, who earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2022, is expected to play a crucial leadership role in the secondary.
“He’s going to be a major piece for us on the back end,” Surtain said. “With his accolades, his knack for making plays, and his leadership, he’ll be a big-time asset. I’m excited to line up with him.”
Greenlaw, on the other hand, is working his way back from an Achilles injury suffered in Super Bowl LVIII, a blow that limited him to just two games in 2024. Despite the setback, Surtain believes Greenlaw’s presence will bring a much-needed edge to Denver’s linebacker corps.
“Watching his tape, he’s just relentless,” Surtain said. “He brings a toughness and leadership that every great defense needs. He was a key part of that 49ers Super Bowl run, and I can’t wait to see what he brings to our team.”
Despite competing in the NFL's most competitive division, the Broncos have their eyes on a deeper playoff run and possibly more. With Surtain leading the defense and new talent joining the ranks, Denver is aiming to turn last season’s success into a championship push.
