Puka Nacua plans early retirement from NFL: Aiming for family and fulfillment by age 30

​Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, at 23, has made headlines with his unconventional plan to retire from the NFL by the age of 30. In a recent appearance on the "Join the Lobby" podcast, Nacua shared his intention to limit his career to seven or eight seasons, drawing inspiration from former teammate Aaron Donald, who retired at 32 after a stellar career. Nacua admires Donald's decision to exit at the peak of his performance and wishes to emulate that trajectory. 

Beyond his professional aspirations, Nacua places significant importance on his personal life. Coming from a large family with five siblings, including notable figures like former BYU safety Kai Nacua and current BYU wide receiver Tei Nacua, he envisions having at least five sons himself. He expressed a strong desire to be actively involved in his children's lives, stating, "I want to have a big family. I want to be able to be a part of their lives and be as active as I can with them." ​

Nacua's perspective is influenced by his own experiences with injuries. In his rookie season, he set an NFL record with 1,486 receiving yards and 105 receptions. The following year, despite recording 79 receptions for 990 yards and three touchdowns, he missed six games due to a knee injury. These challenges have heightened his awareness of the physical toll the sport can take, reinforcing his decision to pursue an early retirement. ​
