Rams Prepare for 2025 Draft: Stafford Watches as LA Targets Key Positions for Future Success

Matthew Stafford may not play a direct role in the Los Angeles Rams' draft process, but every now and then, the team asks for his opinion on a prospect. The veteran quarterback, however, keeps his focus on what’s important, confident that the Rams’ front office and coaching staff will make the right decisions.

“I’m excited that I’m not in the green room again,” Stafford, who was the first overall pick in the 2009 draft, said. “I just get to sit back, relax, and see who’s going to be a big, integral part of what we’re doing this year.”

The Rams are entering the draft with a strong track record of recent success. In the last two drafts, they’ve added standout players like star receiver Puka Nacua, defensive tackle Kobie Turner, edge rusher Jared Verse, and defensive lineman Braden Fiske. All of these players were finalists for rookie-of-the-year awards, with Verse winning the honor last season.

Under the leadership of coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead, the Rams have built a promising roster that includes a mix of talented young players and seasoned veterans like Stafford. The goal is to position the team for a Super Bowl run in 2025.

“We’ve hit the mark on special human beings that are wired the right way,” McVay said, emphasizing that these players have the physical traits to reach their highest potential within the team’s environment.

The Rams are poised to extend their successful draft streak when the process begins Thursday in Green Bay, Wisconsin. As part of a tribute to first responders, the team will conduct the draft from the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Air Operations headquarters in Van Nuys.

With additions like free-agent receiver Davante Adams, center Coleman Shelton, and defensive lineman Poona Ford, the Rams are bolstering their roster to build on their NFC divisional-round appearance last season. But there are still some key positions Snead could target, including cornerback, tight end, receiver, offensive line, and possibly quarterback.

The Rams enter the draft with eight picks, including No. 26 in the first round. They lack a second-round pick, which could prompt Snead to trade back. However, they have two third-round picks (Nos. 90 and 101), one in the fourth round (No. 127), and four in the sixth round (Nos. 190, 195, 201, and 202). If Snead selects a player in the first round, it will be the first time since 2015-2016 that he has done so in consecutive years.

After trading up to select Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in 2016, and acquiring players like cornerback Jalen Ramsey through trade, the Rams went seven years without a first-round pick. But last year, with the retirement of Hall of Fame defensive lineman Aaron Donald, the Rams used their first-round pick on pass rusher Jared Verse and traded up to select his teammate Braden Fiske in the second round.

The Rams’ aging cornerbacks, Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon, as well as the expiring contract of Cobie Durant, have left defensive coordinator Chris Shula seeking reinforcements. Top cornerback prospects this year include Travis Hunter from Colorado, Jahdae Barron from Texas, Will Johnson from Michigan, and Trey Amos from Mississippi.

After trying to trade up to select tight end Brock Bowers last year, McVay could be in the market for another tight end, with top prospects including Tyler Warren of Penn State and Colston Loveland of Michigan. While the addition of Adams adds depth to the receiver corps, McVay could still target another dynamic receiver.

Finally, the big question is whether the Rams have identified a quarterback who could eventually succeed Stafford if the 16-year veteran retires in the coming years. While they selected Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, the Rams are still evaluating the 2024 quarterback class, which includes Cam Ward of Miami, Shedeur Sanders of Colorado, Jalen Milroe of Alabama, Will Howard of Ohio State, and Jaxson Dart of Mississippi.

"I don’t think I could truly answer that honestly," Snead said of his thoughts on the quarterbacks, “so I’ll keep that internal.”

As always, Stafford will be watching closely.
