Seahawks Open to Trading Sam Howell After Signing Drew Lock, with Quarterback Competition Ahead

The Seahawks are reportedly open to trading backup quarterback Sam Howell, with multiple teams showing interest in acquiring him, according to sources. This comes after Seattle signed Drew Lock last week, reuniting him with Geno Smith as a potential backup to new starting quarterback Sam Darnold. Jaren Hall, the fourth quarterback on the roster, adds to the competition at the position, possibly creating a surplus.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider discussed the situation on Seattle Sports 710-AM, stating that Howell and Lock will compete for the backup role. Under former coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks typically kept only two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, but that changed last season with Mike Macdonald as head coach. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who worked with the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, also favored keeping three quarterbacks.

The Seahawks acquired Howell from the Washington Commanders in a trade last March, giving up third- and fifth-round picks in exchange for Howell and some additional draft selections. Howell, a fifth-round pick by Washington in 2022, started all 17 games for the Commanders in 2023, leading the NFL with 612 attempts but struggling with 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. The Commanders finished the season with a 4-13 record, and Howell was subsequently traded to Seattle, with Washington drafting Jayden Daniels.

Howell's performance in the offseason and a tough relief appearance in December raised questions about his readiness for the backup role. Still, Schneider believes Howell was in a difficult position last year, being thrust into a new system with limited preparation. Despite the struggles, Schneider sees Howell's mobility as a good fit for Kubiak’s offense, which features a heavy focus on quarterback bootlegs.

Schneider emphasized that the addition of Lock doesn't rule out the possibility of drafting another quarterback, adding that the team feels good about their current depth at the position. Lock's contract is for two years and $5 million, with $2.25 million in guaranteed money. "We have four guys that we really like," Schneider said, making it clear that the quarterback competition in Seattle will be intense this offseason.
