Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey will miss the remainder of the 2024–25 NBA season after reinjuring his sprained right finger during his rehabilitation process, the team announced on Wednesday. An MRI confirmed the severity of the injury, which caused significant pain and swelling. Despite this setback, the team expects Maxey to make a full recovery.
Maxey, 24, has been sidelined since March 3 due to the finger injury and an additional back issue. Before his injury, he was having a standout season, averaging a career-high 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds over 52 games—all starts. His exceptional performance earned him his first All-Star selection and the NBA’s Most Improved Player award for the 2023–24 season.
The 76ers have faced significant challenges this season, with injuries to key players contributing to their struggles. Both Joel Embiid and Paul George were also ruled out for the season, leading to the team's elimination from playoff contention. Prior to their recent victory, the Sixers endured a 12-game losing streak and have lost 27 of their last 30 games, resulting in a 23-56 record.
In their latest game, the 76ers ended their losing streak with a decisive 122-103 win over the Washington Wizards. Jeff Dowtin Jr. led the team with a career-high 30 points, while Lonnie Walker IV contributed 24 points. This victory marked Philadelphia's first win since March 16.
Maxey's injury is a significant blow to the 76ers, who had high expectations for the season. His absence, along with that of other key players, has highlighted the team's depth issues and the impact of injuries on their performance. As the 76ers look to the future, the focus will be on ensuring the health and readiness of their core players, including Maxey, Embiid, and George, for the next season.
