The New York Yankees are facing a potential setback in their pitching rotation as right-hander Clarke Schmidt was scratched

The New York Yankees are facing a potential setback in their pitching rotation as right-hander Clarke Schmidt was scratched from his scheduled Grapefruit League start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, March 17, 2025, due to soreness in his pitching shoulder.

Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Schmidt will not undergo any medical tests at this time. Instead, the plan is for Schmidt to throw a bullpen session on Monday to assess his condition further. Boone emphasized caution, stating, "With some of the attrition we've had, it's not something we want to push. He's just not bouncing back as well as he wanted to."

In Schmidt's absence, left-hander Brent Headrick is slated to start against the Blue Jays.

This development adds to the Yankees' growing list of pitching concerns this spring. The team has already been dealing with injuries to key pitchers, including Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil. Schmidt's shoulder soreness further exacerbates the challenges facing the Yankees' rotation as the regular season approaches.

Schmidt's injury history includes a right lat strain in May 2024, which sidelined him for an extended period. Prior to that injury, he had been performing at a high level, posting a 2.52 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 60.2 innings, with 67 strikeouts and 20 walks.

The Yankees are hopeful that Schmidt's current shoulder soreness is a minor issue that can be resolved quickly. His performance and health are pivotal for the team's aspirations in the upcoming season.

As the situation develops, the Yankees will continue to monitor Schmidt's condition closely, making adjustments to their rotation plans as necessary to ensure the team's competitiveness and the pitcher's long-term health.
