Titans Select Cam Ward with No. 1 Overall Pick, Ushering in a New Era at Quarterback

The moment the Tennessee Titans wrapped up their 3-14 season in 2024, their sights were set on the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Now, the months of speculation have come to an end. On Thursday night in Green Bay, the Titans officially selected quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick, solidifying the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise.

While this is the first time the Titans have made the first overall pick under their current name, the franchise—then known as the Houston Oilers—previously held the top spot twice, including the 1978 selection of Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell. Thursday’s pick also marks the first time Tennessee has drafted a quarterback in the first round since selecting Marcus Mariota second overall in 2015.

Ward arrives in Nashville with an impressive collegiate résumé. After lighting up the stat sheet at Incarnate Word and Washington State, Ward transferred to Miami for the 2024 season and took his game to another level. He threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns while leading the Hurricanes’ high-powered offense, earning the prestigious Davey O’Brien Award and being named to the All-America team. While he was often mentioned alongside Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders early in the draft conversation, Ward separated himself as the clear top quarterback in the eyes of many NFL teams as the season progressed.

The Titans' quarterback struggles over the past three seasons have been well documented, with the team posting a 16-35 record and cycling through five different starting QBs during that span. 2023 second-round pick Will Levis was one of them, but Ward’s arrival signals a clear reset at the position under new general manager Mike Borgonzi, who took over earlier this year after the firing of Ran Carthon.

Head coach Brian Callahan brings valuable experience to this transition. As the former offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, Callahan played a key role in developing 2020 No. 1 pick Joe Burrow into one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. The Titans hope Ward can follow a similar trajectory, bringing stability and star power back to the quarterback position in Tennessee.

Before Ward can chase success on the field, his first challenge will be learning the playbook and establishing chemistry with his new teammates. If he can quickly adapt to the professional game and grow within Callahan’s system, the Titans may finally have their long-awaited franchise quarterback.
