Tyler Soderstrom's Historic Start Continues with Multi Homer Performance

Tyler Soderstrom is making history with his unprecedented start to the season, reaching remarkable levels of production. In a dominant 12-3 victory over Chicago at Rate Field, Soderstrom provided half of his team’s offense and etched his name in the record books alongside baseball legends. He became the first player in AL/NL history under the age of 23 to hit three multi homer games in his team’s first 17 games of a season. Only one other player in A's franchise history has achieved this feat: Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, who did so in 1974.

“It’s pretty surreal,” said Soderstrom of his early-season tear. “Growing up as a kid, I’d be pretty proud of myself right now. I’m just glad to be in this position. I’m super grateful for this opportunity, and I’m just trying to have a good time and take it day by day.”

The list of players who have hit three multi homer games in their team’s first 17 games of a season is filled with baseball royalty, and Soderstrom’s name now sits among them:

  1. Reggie Jackson (8) - 1969

  2. Mark McGwire (7) - 1987

  3. Jose Canseco (4) - 1987 4-T. Tyler Soderstrom (3) - 2025 4-T. Eric Chavez (3) - 2001 4-T. Jimmie Foxx (3) - 1930

In all of Major League Baseball, Soderstrom is now just the fifth player to accomplish this feat. The other four players are:

  • Teoscar Hernández (2020)

  • Carlos Delgado (2001)

  • Reggie Jackson (1974)

Among the 26 players in the A’s clubhouse, Lawrence Butler is perhaps the least surprised by Soderstrom’s rapid rise. Butler, who was a teammate of Soderstrom for much of his Minor League career, watched firsthand as Soderstrom hit 72 home runs across four seasons. He’s always believed in Soderstrom’s potential.

“Like I said before, he’s my pick to click this year,” Butler said. “I’ve seen him do it in Single-A, High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. Now he’s doing it in the big leagues. He’s Babe Ruth for us right now. I hope he keeps it going.”

The A’s have every reason to believe Soderstrom will keep up his torrid pace. Since being drafted by Oakland in 2020 out of Turlock High School, Soderstrom was recognized as a special hitter with power and an advanced approach at the plate. Though his journey to the Major Leagues had some ups and downs over the past two seasons, Soderstrom is now proving he’s the hitter the A’s always believed he could be, crushing every pitch in the zone that comes his way.

“I just feel comfortable,” said Soderstrom. “I feel like I’m controlling the zone. I’m getting good pitches and I’m able to put good swings on them. I’m just trying to keep putting good at-bats together, keep getting wins, and having a good time.”

To cap off his third multi homer game of the season, Soderstrom achieved the feat on his first-ever Jackie Robinson Day as a big leaguer. In tribute to the occasion, he wore custom Nike cleats featuring Robinson’s iconic No. 42 on both sides of each shoe, honoring the legendary player who broke baseball’s color barrier.
