Tyron Smith, the veteran offensive tackle, is set to officially retire as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. After spending the 2024 season with the New York Jets, Smith will sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Cowboys.
The retirement ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 2:00 PM Central Time, at the team's facility in Frisco, Texas.
NFL legend and longtime Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith is officially retiring from football, according to NFL Network. Smith will cap off his illustrious 14-year career by signing a one-day contract to retire as a Cowboy, despite spending the 2024 season with the New York Jets.
Drafted ninth overall by Dallas in the 2011 NFL Draft out of USC, Smith became a cornerstone of the Cowboys' offensive line for more than a decade. After starting as a right tackle in his rookie season, he transitioned to left tackle in 2012 and remained a dominant force, protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.
Over his 13 seasons with the Cowboys, Smith earned eight Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors—two of them first-team. His elite play made him one of the most respected linemen in the league, and a likely future Hall of Famer.
In 2024, Smith signed with the New York Jets to protect Aaron Rodgers, but his time in New York was cut short due to a neck injury sustained in Week 10 against the Cardinals. He was placed on injured reserve and didn’t return to action, ending his season with 10 starts.
Smith now follows fellow Cowboys icon Zack Martin into retirement. Martin, a nine-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro, announced his own retirement earlier this offseason after 11 standout years in Dallas.
Tyron Smith leaves the game as one of the most dominant and decorated offensive tackles of his era, closing the book on a stellar NFL journey where he’ll forever be remembered as a Cowboy.
